While not the traditional way to meet with your potential employer, a Zoom interview can actually be an advantage for job seekers. Here’s how.
1. Dance like you do… because no-one’s watching
A virtual interview gives you the freedom to choose where YOU would like to be interviewed. A quiet space free from distraction is important during the interview, but right before the call starts try playing your favourite pump-up song, meditating for 5 minutes or standing in a power stance. Do what makes you feel most confident in complete privacy, and set yourself up for a great first impression.
2. You’re allowed all the cheat sheets
You’ve done heaps of research, great! Write any keywords you want to communicate in a large font and stick them to the wall behind your screen. You will be prompted to use them throughout the interview, and ensure you’re speaking their language.
3. Image is everything but pants are optional
How you present yourself in an interview is a great way to demonstrate to your potential colleagues that you are a good fit for their culture. While a crisp shirt, and neat grooming are always a winner for an interview, the unique advantage of Zoom is that you can wear your jeans, track pants or shorts on the bottom and no-one will know. Channel that relaxed confidence the extra comfort gives you, and nail that job.
4. Work those angles
First impressions count, especially in an interview. On zoom you have complete control of your environment and taking the time to set up correctly will not only ensure you look your best, but that you feel relaxed and prepared. You can use the zoom video preview to check how you will come across on screen during the interview. Make sure you are sitting in a well lit position so your face is clear and visible. Positioning your computer camera lense at head height or slightly higher will be the most flattering, and professional. This angle will make the interviewer feel they are having a conversation across the table from you. If you notice any distractions in the background, move them out of the way. A big pile of laundry waiting to be folded might stop your potential employer from focusing on you during the conversation.
5. Don’t be late
Arriving 5 minutes late whether on zoom or in person is terrible interview etiquette and won’t set you up for success. Interviewing from home can give you a false sense of time as there is no commute, but there are plenty of last minute distractions that could zap your time. Do you need to let the dog out? Prepare a glass of water? Or run to the loo one last time? Think about what you might need to do ahead of time to click that “start zoom” link 5 minutes early so that you are online and ready to go when they are.
